The
Prattville Wesleyan Church was first started in 1946 by Mrs. Merrymon, and Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Spencer. The
church was named the Prattmont Wesleyan Methodist Church. Located on South Memorial Drive, in those days
it was Prattville and Prattmont.
Rev. Wardner Medders was appointed the Pastor in August 1946.
He and his wife, Dorothy, commuted from Montgomery first by bus, and by car later. In 1949 the pastor
and family moved to Prattmont.
Mrs. Merrymon was the sister of Mrs. Spencer. Mr. Spencer was
the Mayor of Prattmont, Alabama. Mrs. Merrymon sold her farm in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and gave proceeds to
help build the church.
The Church consisted of four block walls up and around the windows, a saw mill owner
donated rough timbers to frame the roof. Another company donated plaster for inside walls.
In 1955
an addition was added to the back of the Church. Four rooms upstairs, three rooms downstairs, two restrooms.
In 1967, the church purchased the Gray’s home next door to the Church and made Sunday School classes and more
parking space.
On June 26, 1968, property was purchased on East Main to build a new church. In
1984, construction began on the current facilities. The old church was sold on November 16, 1986.
In 1995
Reverand Medders retired after 45 years as Pastor. He passed away January 1998. Mrs.
Dorothy Medders passed away June 2008.
Pastor Larry and Marcy Burke and family came in 1995 and was Pastor until 2007.
Pastor Greg Boyce and his wife Patti were here in 1998 as Youth Pastor.
Our current pastor, Dr. Tom
Ward and his wife Marilyn and family, came in 2007. Over the course of 64 years, we have had only three
Pastors and one Youth Pastor.
Two families from the early church are attending the church today.
They are the Meek family, Belle Simmons and Bo Birdsong and their children and grandchildren, some of the Pogue grandchildren,
and me, Norma Pogue. I married Wesley W. Pogue in the old church in 1951 by Pastor Medders.
Wesley Pogue’s family was one of the first involved in the early church.
